Protocol on Agreement on Air Traffic Signed between Georgia and Republic of Korea

Within the framework of the visit of the Government delegation of the Republic of Korea on July 8-10, 2019, negotiations to summarize the text of the Agreement between the Government of Georgia and the Government of the Republic of Korea were held.

Two-day negotiations resulted in the initialing of the Agreement and the relevant protocol that obliged the parties to complete the internal procedures and put the Agreement in force until the end of 2019.

Within the framework of the negotiations, an agreement was reached which allows the Georgian side to carry regular flights to Korea’s largest international airports after signing the above-mentioned Agreement. The Agreement will create legal bases in the field of the air transportation between the two countries that will make direct flights between Georgia and the Republic of Korea more attractive, expand the flight area, enhance trade and economic relations and promote tourism development. The agreement is based on liberal principles.

It is noteworthy that the charter flights between the Republic of Korea and Georgia have been carried out since 2018. In this particular period, the Korean Air implemented 2 tourist charters, with 557 passengers being transported between Tbilisi and Seoul. This year, during the period of January-June, the Korean Air implemented 4 tourist charter flights, with 935 passengers transported.

In addition, it is important to note that the number of visitors from the Republic of Korea to Georgia is dramatically increased. In particular, 7 185 visitors from the Republic of Korea arrived in Georgia during January-June of 2019, which is by 29,8% higher number compared to the same period of 2018 (5 536 visitors). As for the year of 2018, a total of 13 278 visitors arrived in Georgia, which is by 112,2% greater number compared to 2017 (6 257 visitors).

Taking into consideration the above data, establishing a legal frame for the air transportation between the two countries is of great priority.
