Natia Turnava, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, examined the ongoing rehabilitation works of the historic Borjomi HPP. The hydroelectric power plant in Borjomi Park was one of the first in the Russian Empire after the power plants in St. Petersburg and Akhali Atoni. The HPP was put into operation on January 15, 1899 and had a total capacity of 140 hp. In 1950, the HPP ceased operations. The project for the restoration of the station is being implemented by the JSC Energy Development Fund.

“First of all, this is a museum space, which will be designed and implemented under the leadership of the Cultural Heritage Agency. Work is currently underway on part of the museum. However, the second and most important thing is to restore the station to its original function - it will be a small “green” hydropower plant with a capacity of 103 kW,” – the Minister said.

According to Natia Turnava, the restored historical hydroelectric power plant will be another landmark that can be visited in Borjomi Park. “It will make Borjomi Park even more attractive, which is already rich in many historical sites. We have already completed part of the design and by the end of the year we will be able to move on to the restoration work,” – the Minister added.

JSC Energy Development Fund has been instructed to restore the hydroelectric power plant in Borjomi Municipality, which is located in the mineral water park, as an industrial cultural heritage monument by the decree of the Government of Georgia. The restored hydro power plant will perform two functions – it will be a museum and a modern hydroelectric power plant at the same time.

Besik Amiranashvili, the State Representative in Samtskhe-Javakheti and Giorgi Chikovani, the Director of the Energy Development Fund of Georgia together with the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development inspected the rehabilitation works.
