The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Natia Turnava, visited the public school equipped with a solar power plant in Batumi together with the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Tornike Rizhvadze, the Minister of Education of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Maia Khajishvili, and the Director of the Georgian Energy Development Fund, Giorgi Chikovani.

“The development of green renewable energy is a priority of our energy policy, which envisages the implementation of the projects generating new renewable energy sources, in this case solar energy, in favor of our education system.

As part of our project, solar panels are already being installed on the roofs of up to 20 schools, which, on the one hand, will enable the schools to save electricity bills and, on the other hand, in case of excess energy production, will make it possible for the school to supply the system with electricity and receive additional income. The project, which is being implemented with the support of the Energy Development Fund and the Government of Adjara, includes 13 schools solely in Batumi, as well as several ones in other regions, and we will introduce the same systems to Tbilisi public schools, as well,” - Natia Turnava said.

The total installed capacity of solar power systems in 13 public schools of Batumi is 333 kW, while the total cost of the project amounts to more than half a million euros.

The project, developed in partnership with the Georgian Energy Development Fund and the Lithuanian Company “Ia Solis” Ltd., has received a grant allocated by the Project Management Agency of the Ministry of Environment Protection of Lithuania. The project will enable schoolchildren, staff and local people to become better acquainted with the specifics of renewable resources and to evaluate its direct positive effects and benefits.
