Natia Turnava Met with Bakuriani Ski Cross World Cup Organizers

Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Natia Turnava met with the organizers of the Bakuriani Ski Cross World Cup.

Klaus Waldner, Race Director for Ski and Snowboard Cross of the International Ski Federation, Irakli Chirakadze, Director of the Mountain Resorts Development Company, Zurab Kostava, President of the Georgian Ski Federation and Patrick Lang, Vice President of the Federation participated in the meeting.

The world stages of ski-cross will be held in Bakuriani on February 26-28, which will be held under the auspices of the International Ski Federation. Georgian mountain resort is hosting such high-ranking sports competitions for the first time.

Natia Turnava spoke about the importance of holding such a high-level mountain-skiing tournament in Bakuriani for the promotion of Georgia as a developed mountain-tourist country. According to the Minister, Georgian Government always did and will provide strong support to the organizers of the international competitions in Bakuriani and Gudauri and for this purpose actively participates in the development of the sports infrastructure.

Turnava noted that Bakuriani is already ready to host the World Cup competition at a high level, as well as the Ski and Snowboard Freestyle World Championship in 2023.

“This important international competition is held under the auspices of the preparations for the 2023 winter championship. As you know, for this purpose, very serious delegations are visiting Georgia from nine different countries, which will take part in this important sport event. At today’s meeting, we discussed the prospects for the development of our winter ski resorts and Georgia, as one of the newcomers to the winter championships of international competitions on the world map and the prospects of our country were given very positive evaluations,” – Natia Turnava said.

The competitions organized under the auspices of the International Ski Federation will be held in strict compliance with the COVID protocol, rules and regulations. It was said that within the framework of the World Cup project, the largest infrastructure projects were implemented in Bakuriani - three new ropeways were built, an artificial calculation system was installed, special equipment and safety equipment were purchased, etc.

Prospects for the development of the winter ski resorts in Georgia were also discussed at the meeting, as well as the readiness of the country’s winter resorts to host international winter sports competitions.

It should be noted that within the framework of the Ski Cross World Cup in Bakuriani, 51 athletes from nine countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Britain, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, etc.) are taking part in the competition. Due to the importance of the tournament, the competitions held under the auspices of the International Ski Federation will be actively covered by the international media. The tournaments will be covered live by the Italian-Swiss media company Infront while the live stream will be offered for the international audience in different countries of the world on the Eurosport.
