“The Anaklia Deep Sea Port will address two significant challenges of Georgia’s economic growth – transforming country into the logistic hub using its strategic location and establishing it as a marine state” – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Giorgi Kobulia stated at the official ceremony dedicated to launching of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port marine construction works.

Giorgi Kobulia highlighted that the Anaklia Port will greatly contribute to increasing Georgia’s competitiveness and it will also allow to attract the cargos-flows from other transit routes.

The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Giorgi Kobulia, accompanied by the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Anaklia Development Consortium, Mamuka Khazaradze and the representatives of the Anaklia Project Investor Company, examined one of the world’s largest dredging vessel  Athena and got familiar with the ongoing works at the site. The dredging vessel Athena will provide extraction of 5 million cubic meters of sand from the sea on to the shore.

“Anaklia Deep Sea Port construction is a project of outmost importance for us. This project addressed two difficult challenges that Georgia faces today. The first challenge is the proper use of the country’s geographic location and transforming it onto the logistic corridor. At this point, the process is not sufficiently rapid and need to be boosted. The Anaklia Port will greatly contribute to increasing the country’s competitiveness and attracting cargos from other routes. I would also like to mention another challenge – we want to establish Georgia as a marine state” – Giorgi Kobulia noted.

Giorgi Kobulia also stressed that Georgia has rather impressive traditions as a maritime state and which need to be restored. “Few days ago, we held the Georgia International Maritime Forum – GIMF 2018 and where discussed the related issues there. We need to strengthen our maritime activities regarding the development of the maritime services, the creation of the fleet and the establishment of the high schools for the seafarers. These are the challenges are the challenges that Georgia faces today and I believe that Anaklia and this great project will significantly contribute to the solution of these challenges” – Giorgi Kobulia, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development added.

Construction of the first base of the Anaklia Deep Sea Port is due to be completed in 2020.
