Georgia was elected a member of the Executive Board of the UN World Tourism Organization for the first time at the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization in Madrid.

“This is a very important day for us and for Georgian tourism. For the first time, the General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization has approved Georgia as a member of the Executive Board of this organization, which is an event of historical significance for us and Georgian tourism,” –Natia Turnava said in Madrid after the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization.

As the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development stated, this is a very honorable membership for Georgia, as about 200 countries are members of this organization and only 35 countries make up the Executive Council, where Georgia is approved with the European quota.

Georgia will be a member of the Board for a period of 4 years and will have the opportunity to be involved in setting the goals of the organization and its further successful implementation, as well as to ensure its efficient and transparent functioning. Given its strategic location, Georgia will be able to protect the interests of both the Black Sea and Eastern European regions in terms of tourism development.

The Executive Board of the United Nations World Tourism Organization consists of 35 member states and is the governing body of the WTO, which ensures the effective work of the organization and discusses key issues of travel and tourism industry policy on a global scale.
