Guram Guramishvili at Road Safety Improvement Conference

Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Guram Guramishvili participated in a conference held within the framework of the EU Public Service Twinning Project “Supporting Establishment of Unified Road Safety Database and Further Improving Road Safety Management in Georgia”. The project is biennial and envisages the development of road safety policy in the country at the institutional level and the improvement of the quality of road accident data collection and analysis methods.

Polish Minister of Funds and Regional Policy Development, Grzegorz Puda Georges, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Alexander Darakhvelidze, Deputy Minister of Regional Policy and Infrastructure Mzia Giorgobiani, Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health Amiran Gamkrelidze and other involved officials also attended the Conference.

The project envisages cooperation of the Polish and Lithuanian experts with Georgian counterparts and the development of road safety policies through the capacity of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health.

In his speech, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development said that ensuring road safety is one of the main priorities of the Government of Georgia and that the EU Technical Assistance Twinning Project is of great importance for fulfilling this task. According to the Deputy Minister, in the field of road safety, the drafts of the Georgian National Road Safety Strategy and its Action Plan (2022-2023) have already been developed.

“The goal of the strategy is to reduce the number of deaths and severe accidents caused by the road traffic accidents. The strategy covers such aspects as increasing the effectiveness of road safety management and changing the behaviour of the road users in a positive way, building a safe road infrastructure, improving the quality of vehicle safety, and providing prompt and effective medical care.

Guramishvili said that the EU-supported project provides an opportunity to further strengthen the cooperation between Georgia, Poland and Lithuania and reiterates Georgia’s choice to develop in line with the European values. European Union’s support is appreciated, which gives Georgia an opportunity to share the experience of the EU member states.

Over the next two years, the twinning project will improve electronic road safety databases by increasing the capacity of the staff involved in the road safety data management.

In addition, the project aims to develop a unified road safety management system for national agencies working in the field of the road safety, through the establishment of an effective national tram registry and data management system.
