An event dedicated to the celebration of the International Day of Seafarers was held in Batumi. Georgia, together with other maritime countries, has been celebrating the International Day of Seafarers with various events since 2011.

“I would like to confirm my special respect to the seafarers of Georgia, as representatives of one of the most difficult, honorable and responsible professions. The celebration of this day is very important for the development of the maritime industry of our country,” – Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Levan Davitashvili stated in his speech at the solemn event dedicated to the Day of the Seafarer in Batumi.

Levan Davitashvili congratulated the seafarers on their professional day and noted that recently, the interest of big states in our sailors has increased. “It is the result of your professionalism and dedication, the existing maritime education system in Georgia and your preparation level, that makes you one of the most sought-after seafarers in the world. It is precisely your great merit that today the seafarers certificates issued by Georgia are recognized by the European Union and you have the right to serve on ships sailing under the flag of 62, including 19 European, countries”.

Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Levan Davitashvili, Chairman of the Adjara Government Tornike Rizhvadze, Head of Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy, Tamar Ioselian and Batumi Mayor Archil Chikovani congratulated the seafarers on the professional day.

Long-distance sailing captains, Zurab Chkhaidze, Nugzar Dolidze, Vazha Goguadze, Akaki Esanjia, as well as Senior Mechanics Davit Tetrashvili, Nikoloz Tsirekidze, Omar Lomidze, Ali Sarishvili, Lasha Tavadze and Stefane Vartanian were awarded for their special contribution to the development of maritime transport.

At the end of the official part of the event, a moment of silence was observed to honor the sailors who died in the line of duty, and, according to the tradition, the ceremony of lowering the crown into the sea was performed against the background of the ships’ horns.
