“Mountain development, developing business and economy in the mountain regions is our outmost priority,” – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, George Kobulia at the event dedicated to the International Mountain Day held at Expo-Georgia.

The Prime Minister of Georgia and other members of the Georgian Government attended the event. Promoting the sustainable development of the mountain regions was one of the main topics of the event. As noted by the speakers, one of the aims of celebrating the International Mountain Day is the facilitation of the effective cooperation within various institutions, the civil society and the private sector in terms of mountain development.

The mountain regions of Georgia were presented by the successful in different spheres local residents who were later given special awards. The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development awarded the producer of the Racha Ham, Mr. Rostom Kobakhidze. According to George Kobulia, Rostom Kobakhidze is a man who established the production of one of the unique Georgian products in Racha.

“Such enterprises and such product make our country more popular and we need more such productions. Today, as I know, this enterprise produced its product only for the Georgian market, but we must help Mr. Kobakhidze to expand production for export - by the way, the enterprise is designed to process 29 tons of pork,” – George Kobulia noted.

International Mountain Day was established in 1992. The increased interest to the mountains encouraged the UN General Assembly to announce the year of 2002 as the International Year of the Mountain regions. The United Nations resolution was adopted the same year and the December 11 was named to be the International Mountain Day.
